Default engine is making whining sound, help needed

Hi all

Its been like this for about a week now and its starting to worry me.

Went to start the car a couple of days ago, when started and pressing the clutch in the engine or something was making a whining sort of noise?

Now the car does this everytime i start it up and lasts for about the first ten minutes of driving,it also does it now when pushing on the accelerator and when letting of it?

And to top it off, theres a strange smell coming from somewhere when the car is idleing and when im driving it?could this be linked or something else?

Im not sure whether this could have anything to do with it but the rubber boot that comes from the engine on the driveshaft has split and sprayed some grease onto the underneath of the engine.
here is a pic

well, one things for sure mate, that doesn't look good and its definitley an MOT failure if the oil/grease is seaping out of a split in the boot. Best be getting that changed and re-lube that joint - worst case maybe the join may be bust because water has penetrated and siezed or knakered the bearings. Do you have any specialist local - best get it in for an inspecition.

Chances are its been leaking for a while and could have done some serious damage resulting in the need to change part of the shaft...

well if it only happens wen u press the clutch in then the clutch release bearing may be worn.

if it is that then i would just leave it untill the clutch dies on it as it is i gearbox off job to remove it

also clutch release bearing are known to be a bit on the noisy/juddery side wen cold
if you do replace it then i would recomend fitting a sti one in the future

wow this has to be the third time this week i suggested this:
my power steering pump whines like a bitch sometimes. Toppping up the fluid makes it a little better. Worth checking your level mate before you get worried.

I think Scoobydoo is on to something dannytwo. I have a MY98 which makes a whining noise from the engine, has a nasty burning smell and ive noticed it creeps forward from a standstill so im guessing my problem is release bearing and sound like yours could be. Just my 2p's worth
