Default Puff of Smoke

Hiya, my mate was driving in front of me tonight in my 95 sti ra and when he was booting it(giving it some stick), I noticed a bit of smoke uffing out the back. Not alot but after he changed gear and driving on at one stage the smoke lingered for a while as oPPosed to a quick Puff. I could also smell it.

The car is Pretty much standard aPart from a back box. I am using Motul 300V 15w50 and at the moment can only use 95ron Plus a nice bit of NF booster.

Is this something to be worried about and any suggestions would be greatly aPPreciated.

Is your car an import, why can't you use SUL fuel?

Imports from Japan are mapped to run on 100RON fuel, 98RON is the closest we have here which is Optimax (although selected Tesco stores sell 99RON), I wouldn't advise running you're STi on 95 for too long as this will cause pinking, and could eventually lead to engine det. Unless you can make sure you are adding enough octane booster to compensate for this, which in the long run would probably work out more expensive than driving that extra 10-20 miles to fill your car up with SUL.

As for your problem in question, I wouldn't have thought the fuel you are currently using would cause a puff of smoke like you described. Sounds more like an ignition problem. Does the car miss or pop on high boost?

Yes I agree with you on the using of 95 and I have not being doing much driving on this fuel. I do use a good bit of NF and also have a knocklink shich seems quiet enough.
Ocassionaly I get a slight miss or pop but definitely not all the time. Do you think a remap would cure the ignition problem if thats what it is? Could it be worn rings do you think? It is not using any oil though.
Cheers.

Could be one of many things, If its ignition, then it could be either plugs or coilpacks or even both, which does cause the symtoms of missing and popping with puffs of smoke and even blue flames (as in my case!!). I had a coilpack failure not so long ago on my 94 STi, although the car was still perfectly driveable off boost, I had popping and backfiring under high boost.

Dunno If a remap would cure you're problem or not, not sure if anyone would re-map a sick car in the first place.

I changed to coil packs and plugs about 1000 miles ago. The car drives perfectly and I am having no problems re boosting or anything. Could it be over fueling and hence a remap might solve the problem??

it all depends on the colour of the smoke you saw.
