Default Halfords Air-Con Reconditioning Kit. Any Good?

Hi Guys,

MY98 Air-Con seems to have lost it's cooling capabilities over a period of time - seems to suggest a gradual loss of coolant.

Can someone tell me where the valve is located for re-pressuring? Is it the one at the front of the engine compartment?

I was in Halfords the other day and noticed Halfords Air-Con Reconditioning Kit. HAs anyone any experience of these? I'm assuming it doesn't replace coolant or pressure the system enough to get it working when pressure is low?

Is it possible to purchase a DIY kit to top up the coolant?

Cheers

John

Those kits are for cleaning the ducting etc. and killing bacteria that cause musty smells. Air fresheners as it were.
You need to take car to air con expert, look in yellow pages, or some will come to you.
Refill often only £40 ish.
They'll also check system in case you have leaks etc.
It isn't a diy game, emptying and refilling.

I think you're right in part about getting a pro to do the job but wrong about the cleaning - that's another kit Halfords do for cleaning bacteria. The kit I referred to contains an amount of coolant, lubricant and sealant.

Sorry hadn't realised you could get such a kit. I'm surprised someone here hasn't tried it and reported.
Depending on cost relative to pro, could be worth a go. Presumably instructions will tell you which valve to use. Ain't got it on our Scooby only on the Micra!
I must nip in Halfords and look at kit.

In the Halfords in Cardiff it was located right next to the cleaning kit you referred to. It costs £29.95 and is about the size of a small can of WD40.

If it did the job of repressuring the system it would be worth the try but knowing my luck it'd go in one end and out the other - £29.95 down the drain!!

I thought it would cost £70+ to get it done properly but £40 seems much more palatable!

Cheers

That seems high.
Of course some can spot the rich businessmen.

£90!!! Geez, I'll stick to lowering the windows!

My new car comes with AirCon as standard and never needs a refill
