It modifies the MAF signal coming from the airflow sensor thereby fooling the ecu into thinking it is in a different load zone to where it really is. This has the ability to lean fuelling/advance the ignition or richen fuelling/retard the ignition. It's a pretty crude way to tune a car in a limited fashion as it's a piggy-back controller.
You'd be much better off getting an ecu remap, Power FC are good pre-MY01 or ecutek post MY01, which can tailor boost ignition and fuelling to suit your car/current mods precisely.
Word has it AndyF's good at this sort of thing if you're up north and Bob Rawle if you're down saaf
