Question Knocking coming from the back of the car

I am getting a knocking coming from the rear of my car as I go over bumps, mainly at low speed. I have checked the boot for loose items and looked for obvious loose bits (exhaust etc..) but cannot find anything. I have an 05 STi 8 if that helps. Any ideas what it might be?

Knackered shock absorber?

I had one on my MY00 but as your car is a lot newer it's a lot less likely.

The plyboard type 'wooden' shelf in the boot under the carpet rattles on mine - and bangs quite a lot over speed bumps and rutty roads. It's done it on mine ever since we got caught out by going too fast over a really nasty speed hump that was just around a corner. At the time, we thought we had done something really awful to the suspension and pulled in to a layby. I found that the shelf thing had come out of it's fixings and for some reason it is difficult to secure back down into the locating lugs.

It's worth checking this as it might be nothing more sinister. Does the noise go away if you fill the boot with heavy luggage or similar?
