Default Dump Valve. Do i really need one

WRX 2003

Do i really need a dumpvalve guys.
Will it protect and help the performace or is it only there for the noise?
I dont want it just for the noise.

This Might be crap and its only what i heard but i heard that the D/V messes the performace up?

Cheers

I wouldnt change it, there is no benefit in changing it unless you are running big bhp in which case the standard one can leak boost

Yes, but you do know that you've already got one don't you The standard Subaru item is a recirculating model which doesn't produce a silly noise, and recirculates the air back to the turbo to help slow it, thus keeping the measured air in the intake to maintain the correct air/fuel ratio.

Do a search, there's dozens of threads per month on the subject.

As a direct answer to the thread title, YES - you do need a dump valve. Bit 'which' one is up to you.

The standard one, as stated is a recirc type, and doesnt make the whoosh sound ....it is more than adequate for the job, and for all the technical reasons.

A 'vent to atmosphere' (vta) type, does give the whoosh sound.

There are several threads on here, and alot claim that the vta, can (potentially) cause some engine damage as a result of over fuelling.. ( say potentially, cos ive not experienced it) .and yes, vta's are supposed mess up the metering.

i have noticed that since returning my car to the standard one, my mpg on a full tank has slightly improved..

Personally, i think its down to choice - i dont think you could sell vta's if they knowingly knacker'd engines..........i think its driving like a **** to hear it all the time.

I like the whoosh sound, but ive taken my vta off, after 2 and a half years, to get a bit of economy... but its only a 5 minute job to refit it.

Hope this helps
