Default Engine Check Light

Hi, i have a 1994 import impreza WRX and the engine light is permantly on. The engine seems to be operating fine, no noises and runs smoothly and without fault, BUT..... I have been told that due to this light being on, the car could be running in some sort of safety mode in which is decreases boost etc to stop the engine from becoming damaged?

Is this the case, maybe you could shed some light onto this??? I know there are obviously dangers of driving it around like this but i will be getting it sorted this week, i was just wondering if i could be experiencing lower power whilst the light is on?

Safe mode will restrict the engine to 4000rpm. If the light is on all the time its probably a sensor thats gone, depending on which one it is that in itself could reduce power. You can get the error code by connecting two 'T' connectors, which you will find under the dash on the drivers side. Do a search on here for the codes.....
