It allows the boost control system to completely shut off the wastegate actuator from the boost signal or apply all of it, or anywhere in between.

The original 2 port can only bleed off so much so the air has to be restricted, giving slower response time and narrower control bandwidth.

I got mine for £30 + VAT from a breakers, it fits the original pipework, and the plug needs to be slightly modified to fit.

A new one from Subaru is a lot more.

Depends on the boost level you are running, I find the 2 port fine up to 1.4 bar.

I could comment if I know who you were and what car you are having us remap, the need for a three port is a decision made on the basis of car type and mods, its got nothing to do with how much boost is used. If you don't want to put that info into the public domain then email me as per profile.

cheers

I think 'independent' assessment is what he is after, no disrespect..

.
I agree there can be limitations to a 2 port at a higher boost John but did you find my WRX falling into the above category at circa 1.4bar on a 2 port ?

No I didn't Would agree just because the solenoid is 2 port and therefore officially less elegant doesn't mean it won't often do the job. The new age cars do have an advantage in that you don't have to use the maximum duty cycle to control peaks and have a trade off between response and held boost in all gears. The earlier cars do control a fair bit better on 3 ports I reckon, but some go well on 2 ports.
