whats the difference between 4WD and AWD?

i was under the impression AWD meant All Wheel Drive from years of land rover trialing with my dad

they both mean the same, but AWD means its permanent so if your gonna get towed it better be from a low loader the 4wd might have a fuse that can disconect and turn it into a 2wd car , as this was the case with my cav turbo

My theory is that they're the same, however, landrover type vehicles can be selected to just 2wd if you wish, where-as the impreza cannot, therefore i would say the the impreza is awd, and others that can be switched i would call 4 wd........ but i could be completely wrong, it's happened before!!
