Tuning past 280bhp with little funds
Just interested to know what you guys would suggest I do next if i want to increase my power.
Car is a 94 WRX, z4 ecu with Vos chip, HKS super drager full decat, Apexi Induction kit, Hks evc boost controller set at 1 bar. Car was 261bhp before the Z4 & VOS so I'd hope for 270-280 now. (RR is 12/2)
I know the next modification is to fit an uprated fuel pump which is cheap. And I know I can put an FMIC on for about £400. But i'm assuming that it would be silly to uprate the injectors to say 550cc (also cheap) without getting a proper ecu?? Or am i wrong??
I'd like to hit over 300bhp without it costing me a fortune, and I know that a proper ecu is gonna cost me a fair bit. I think I've seen the Apexi Power FC with commander for £550, but I'd need to find someone to map it. And no I'm not driving to Scotland
So what I'm asking really is what order should I buy the bits in?
I'm guessing:
Fuel Pump
FMIC
Apexi power FC & 550cc Injectors & mapping at same time
What other things would you suggest I uprate?
Would I cause a problem to my car by fitting bigger injectors and not changing the ecu? Sorry to be a bit thick here but some of this tuning business is a bit past me.
Any help appreciated
Steve

Depends entirely on what you want from the car. Clarify?
Upgrading the injectors depends on the % duty cycle they are oprating at now, and what further mods push them to.
Trying to do extensive mods on little funds isn't a good idea IMHO. A decent FMIC isn't going to be £400.
You also need to considder your turbo for higher bhp targets. The best way to do it in my opinion is look at the car from a blank sheet, imagine what you want from it, and base the mods around the engine / turbo. And keep it as simple as you can

Hybrid FMIC is around £500 + fitting and works very well.
Uprated fuel pump and regulator you've already mentioned.
Knocklink is a necessary thing too, if you haven't got one.
Then injectors. 550cc is not a bad size to go for. 440s are a bit of a small step up from 380s IMHO, so why not go straight for ones that will last you.
You'll NEED to do something to the ECU if you change the injectors, or else it'll over-fuel like nobody's business. It so happens that I've mapped a Z4 ECU to take 550cc injectors and control the boost up to 1.6 bar. (no external boost controller )
The turbo is still a standard TD05.
Unfortunately, the car that I've done most of these mods to hasn't been rolling roaded yet, but it is certainly well over 300 bhp.
I disagree that you have to spend money to get performance. But you do have to have some idea what you're doing!! I think that £750 should see somewhere approaching 350 bhp - if you don't factor your time into the equation.

What map would you like? Some things cost more than others, as there is considerably more work to get it going.
PM or email me the requirements and I'll let you know.
It'll be in the region of £100 to £250.

what do you use to remap the z4??? or do you remap the VOS?
Do you think you could help me out if i was to upgrade the parts I've mentioned?
Where abouts are you?
I don't really want to run more than say 1.1 or 1.2 bar. I thought the TD05 would only be good for about 300-320bhp?
I'd be well happy with 310!!!

PS: I found an Apexi Power FC for the GC8 Impreza on Ebay for £270!!
The FMIC I was referring to is also sold on Ebay by someone in Hong Kong. Intercooler is £200, hard pipe kit is £183. Probably about £50 for delivery.

That price for a PFC is good provided it comes with at least the hand controller.
I've also got my eye on an IC from Hong Kong... I think we're looking at the same one...
I can map the Z4 by putting in a suitably modified ScoobyECU style chip. It changes the map to cope with the mods and provide suitable fuelling and ignition timing and boost targets.
The TD05 is good for a fair bit. I've got my eye on 350, but would settle for 325 before I go for a TD05/06 turbo I'll know more in March when our local rolling road is finally open!
