FLUCTUATING ON REV COUNTER
HI
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP
WHEN ENGINE IS IDLING IF YOU REV IT AND THEN RELEASE THE THROTTLE
THE REV COUNTER DROPS AND SOMETIMES CUTS OUT,IT ALSO DOES THE
SAME WHEN YOU DRIVE. (LIKE WHEN YOU COME UP TO TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND
YOU DROP DOWN A GEAR)
IT FLUCTUATES WHEN ENGINE IS HOT.
I CHANGED THE COILPACKS OR COULD IT BE THE HT LEADS.

There's no need to shout! :-)
The symptoms you speak of could point to a failing MAF. Get it looked into ASAP as if it is the MAF this will cause fueling issues which could lead to your engine going bang!
Best wishes,

With out a doubt it is the MAF. They are about £100 if I remember.
From: http://stefanostadal.homedns.org/car_mods_engine.htm
Note: There has been a large debate in the Scooby community as to whether installing 3rd party air-filters and induction kits can cause the MAF sensor to fail. There have been many reports with certain makes of induction kit causing failures but no one can prove the exact cause of failure. It's believed that poor installation or excessive vibration has caused these and with the pre '01 Impreza sensors being a tad delicate it may just exacerbate the problem.
From: http://www.iwoc.co.uk/modsairflow.html
Induction kits are available for the Impreza and these replace the whole air box assembly with a pod style filter inside the engine bay. There is an argument that they seem to be of limited benefit on the Impreza Turbo because they suck air from the very hot engine bay. They also have the disadvantage of being very loud as the air gets sucked in! There has also been several reports of the MAF (mass air flow) sensor being contaminated due to the poor filtering offered by some systems and also cases of failure due to vibration. The MAF is located in the section of intake just after the pod and the weight can cause deflections and vibrations enough to break the thick film element of later MY99/00 cars. Ensure that the kit you have has enough bracketting for the pod and supports the MAF and dampens the vibration.

To be sure perform an ECU check as it could be your lambda/O2 sensor
http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co....iag%20Page.htm
What MY? Pre MY99 cars the MAF can cost you about £270 whilst MY99 cost about £75.
If its an MY99/00 then it part no 22794AA010
They are a well known weakness amongst these MY's and an induction may not help due to excessive vibration, a good panel filter (Green, K&N, STi) in the original airbox should suffice.
UK/Jap part, its all the same

The problem.....it was my idle stabilizer valve! and engine relay!! only £20 to fix...never happened again! good luck!!
