Default tracking and alignment

My dad took his 03 WRX in for a service yesterday for the 20K one...@ a cost of £227 and a few pennies.

The servive manager pointed out that the tracking and alignment needed doing, but did not have the time to do it there and then, but it would cost my dad £80 to have it all aligned. So my dad sad no, and he phoned a Great local garage near where we live and it would cost for the same doings..£40.

So what i would like to know is how do these types of garages (non manufacture ones) know how the car is suposed set up. As i am sure that not all car are set at no camber, no toe in/out??

Cheers
