Default Oil Thread - again !

Been lots of threads on oil recently, but thought I would share what I have found.

My Subaru dealer just completed 1000 mile service on my 04 STI - and have used Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 semi-synth.

If you go onto the Castrol website for Subaru Sti 01 onwards it recommends Magnatec 5w-30 !!

I believe it is best to have a semi-synth for the first 10k ish so I am happy with Shell Helix and will change to proper full synth at next service.

I see you've changed to an STI now Do you think you'll get this one remapped?

That's indeed correct, 5w-30 or 5w-40 is recommended once run in.

Oh no not another oil thread

Cheers

Hi Mark,

Good to hear from you.

Yep - bit the bullet and went for an STI. Have only just run it in, so havent had chance to get used to its normal performance yet, but I am sure it wont be long until I contemplate an upgrade.

Magnatec is ok, but I wouldn't use it on the grounds you can get a quality fully synth for not much more £. Certainly wouldn't use it on a modded car either.

You are probably right in your approach, and change to a Motul or Castrol RS 10w 50 or similar on the next one. Do some searching.

Totally agree, look at ester based oils like Motul 300V or Silkolene PRO, the difference is not huge but the quality is.

My local Motor Factors sell Helix Plus for £10.80 for 5 litres. What did Subaru charge? I agree with your dcision to change to fully synthetic after running in

That is a good price but bear in mind it's a hydrocracked petroleum oil, not a proper synthetic and that's why it's cheap.
