Default over heating problem not a scooby

MY01 POLO 1.9 TDI SE 110

Just got the above today for the wife (its covered by warranty but i just want to now if i can sort it or if any 1 had any thoughts)but seems to have a slight problem with overheating.
The thermostat has been replaced and is working fine, but the problem is still there.
It warms up as normal (70 C) but refuses to kick out warm air through the heaters - then the gauge flys up to 110 C and then will pump out warm air! After pulling up the temp dropped down to 70 C, yet still pumped out the warm air
Possible problems????
1./Thermostat (replaced)
2./Air in system (bugger to sort apparently???)
3./Head Gasket (no gunge on oil filler cap)
4./Water Pump?
5./??????????????????????????????

thx

simon

I know nowt about cars generally.

But I had a similar problem with my Peugeot 306 1.9TD, and it was an airlock in the cooling system, after bleeding it, it was fine.

There was a bleed type nipple on one of the lower hoses, and I undid it whilst pooring water/anti freeze into the header tank, when the bubbles disappeared, I tightened the nipple up, and it has been fine for a further 40 tho miles.

90% certain it's the water pump....we have had a few late VW's and Seat's with similar problems to yours.
A lot of water pumps now have PLASTIC impellors pressed onto a metal shaft..basically the impellor goes hard with heat/age,becomes brittle and cracks so it comes off the shaft.....you now have no water flow via the pump.

Just recently this has happened to Alfa-Romeo,Fiat,BMW, Mercedes and VW/Seat cars that have come through the garage. (must be down to cost cutting as we never had this problem with the older cars).

I've seem exactly the same symptoms on a Customer's V6 Alfa - ran OK for 5 minutes, until the water boiled. Water appeared to be flowing back to the header tank, but obviously not at a high enough rate.
It turned out that the w/pump impellor had cracked.
I couldn't beleive that the replacement pump (genuine) was still plastic, and hadn't been modified.
