What type/make of antifreeze to use?
Hi new to computers new to forums but trying. Have 99 uk turbowagon from
new 29k miles. Sevice it myself now out of warranty. Looking at Forums has made me paranoid now waiting for maf sensor togo. Will stop using oil flush did think I was doing good! Looking around net on www.honestjohn.co.uk FAQs no 34 says Jap made cars need different antifreeze. Iused Bluecol cos theres no Subaru branded antifreeze and IM supply Shell when asked and I know dealers use different makes. Any opinons on this especially from the knowledgeable.I do use Silkolene ProS 5-40 though so got something right!

I use a long life formultion from Halfords. It lasts 5 years...it's more chemically stable than "ordinary" anti-freeze, so you might only ever need to change it once!..
Be carefull wrt your oil...most Scoobynetters will tell you that 5w40 is borderline for a Scooby...especially if you push it a little...you'd be better off with a 10w40 or 10w50...Silkolene do 10w50 fully synthetic...Many netters use Motul...as do the WRC rally team!.

Any "mainstream" anti freeze is ok to use, but please stay clear of any containing "Methanol" ! It evaporates very quickly.
You may find this labelled up as "summer antifreeze". Stay clear and dont fill up with it, as after a month or so, its totally out of the system and you are running coloured water for want of better words.

Thanks Crusher and scoobyslut. Bluecol is ethylene glycol so all year round. But oil Oh my gawd! I've read all the oil threads and therein lies madness. I am thinking of changing to 10w-50 though.

I used to have a my99 turbo wagon..and ran that on 10w50 silkolene which is fully synthetic. It was fine with that. I now have an 04 sti, dealer says that they've had a buletin from subaru which tells them to run them on 15w40?....I think that would be ok for summer in a car thats not pushed but 10w50 is a better oil imho for a scooby. Many advocate different oils for summer/winter/track. Undoubtedly track use needs carefull consideration, oil changes before/after, and then a 15w40 or 15w50 has been ok for me, but depends very much on type of track use!. In the winter the choice of 5w or 10w...I'd choose 10w personnally as scoobys don't like thin oil...but some run 5w...
In the summer some run 15w...I prefer 10w. This means for a road car theres less messing about with 5w for winter,15w for summer, and 10w is a good oil for both.
Hope that may be of some help...

What Make/Type of antifreeze to use.
Thanks Crusher. I think I'm going to go 10-50 now. I don't do trackdays or drive hard often. Got to get a scamera detsctor soon though! Trouble is IM(Subaru) change their minds an oil. When I got mine I rang their tech dept who said def 10-30! 3 years later they said 5-40! It seems difficult for owners when even the importers vary recommendations.
