Default whining noise at 70-80

driving home on monday morning then all of a sudden i got a whining noise so i took foot off accelerator and the noise quietened a little so i stopped checked the wheels over as i had just put some alloys on the car and this was first time driving it at high speed since fitting them. couldnt see anything they were all on tight. checked the oil in the engine and gearbox (both on full) and then carried on ... about 30-40 miles later it did the same again just came on suddenly so again i pulled over had a look about see if anything was catching and couldnt find anything so started out again. did another 60 ish miles at the same speed but never happened again since? when i slow down the noise whined down aswell but if i put foot back on accelerator then it whined back up again. it wasnt coming from a particular side it was just there and there was no vibrations on the steering?
any ideas what it could be? or could it just be some crap on the wheels before i fitted them which has now worked its way loose?
Cheers
Tams

could be that you may have got the wrong ET on your alloys and the tyres are rubbing your arches.

Probably wrong its just this happens on corsa since alot of corsa drivers dont have a clue.

You could try fitting your old wheels again to see if it goes away (unlikely)

its not the wheels rubbing anywhere as the car sits quite high a lot higher than any of the turbos and have no lowering springs or anything fitted!

did 70 today on a dual carriage way and no noise again? so not heard it since!
I guess ill just wait and see if it happens again! might try jacking up car this weekend and feel for any play in wheel bearings? will i be able to feel this if they are starting to go?

Oh and the alloys are the standard 15 inch alloys of early wrx's so not as if ive fitted mahoooosive wheels or anything.

Dont know if this helps but i had a noise simmular to what u have discribed, i was told that it was a tesioner or pulley wheel in the engine.

The car has since been in for a service and the noise has total gone and never returned(touch wood).

I dont know if something was adjusted but it might be an area worth looking at.

did you check the oil in the gearbox again when you got home?
its notoriously hard to get a good reading on the dipstick and if it was hot (as you say you stopped, checked the wheels and oil then went about your business) then you prolly had no chance of a decent reading.

its also not uncommon to overfill the gear oil to prevent a noisey thrid gear

Think I have had the same or similar, like a whistly whine, hard to say where it come from but near the front of the car. Got louder as I got faster, as soon as I slowed down it disapeared. Only happened a couple of times, last time was over a month ago! It was like a one off warning I was going to fast!
