Vibration, oil contamination? Intake modifications?

Model year?
Certain years are more prone to failure.

Was the Maf new or 2nd hand?

Do you have an induction kit...and what make and type?

Certain induction kits, steel mesh ones, and some oil/cotton type filters can contaminate the MAF, or if you re-oiled a filter and soaked it with too much oil. Also some cone kits mount the MAF in such a way that it has to cope with excessive vibration from the engine.

I've just ordered a new MAF for my MY99 RB5, so the original one lasted 5 years & 2 months. Ran with the standard air filter for 3yrs, then 1yr with an ITG, another 1yr with an OE one and then the last 2 weeks with a new STI filter.

As John says, it's usually virbration, contamination or some dodgy induction kit.

Wouldn't touch any other induction filter other than the K&N already in place. It has crossed my mind to lose that in favour of a panel too

Sorry thats not correct, however if its a Blitz SUS then guarenteed to do the maf in, if a filter works properly (ie filters) environment only affects change intervals not filtration quality.
