I fitted a Walbro to our Subaru the other day (MY93) using the filter sock that comes with the kit.

We did a track day today and with half a tank of fuel the car started dying under hard cornering. It got worse as time went on. We checked everything, SAFC2 that we fitted yesterday, AFM, electrical connections, map sensor, AVCR settings etc etc and eventually chased the problem down to fuel surge.

Even with half a tank the pump was running dry under hard cornering.

Weve just come back and fitted the original sock on the Walbro. It seems fine now. The original sock drops deeper into the tank than the walbro sock.

Worth bearing in mind if youre fitting a Walbro

 

Thanks for the info...i have just fitted one to a friends and used the new sock/filter that came with it.(i thought it looked too short)
When you fitted your pump did you leave the resistor or cut it off? there semms to be conflicting information as to using it or not with the Walbro pumps.

What resistor? I didnt see one.

Also bear in mind that there are diffeent fitting kits for the Walbro pumps. I just know that the sock that came with the kit I used was incorrect Others might be fine

 

The sock I've had with three examples of the GSS341 has been incorrect for a Subaru as well, original always works. The supplied sock points in the opposite direction.

 

What about the resistor John?

 

Never needed it or seen it in a kit.

 

Walbro needs the old pump filter for a proper supply. I've the same problems when hard cornering. No problem now but it is whinning/sounding too much especially hot weathers and after traffic jams.

 

I fitted the new sock. Looked smaller but sat at the same level in the tank. Running on fumes at times and with hard cornering (roundabouts) never hand a single problem . I used the new sock basically as the old one looked a little past it's sell by date.

the resistor is there already on the oe pump mounting brackets, its two of the four wires that need connecting, thing is, some say to cut the two wires to the resistor and some say leave all four wires connected.

which is it (to cross my thread into this) ?

 

We were at Trax yesterday and did two session s round Silverstone with no fuel surge problems whatsoever after refitting the original sock on Sat night

I still didnt see any resistor, even when fitting the original sock.

Our pump also varies in volume, seems to get louder after the cars been caned.

 

I couldn't physically remove the resistor, as the screw was knackered, but I did bypass it electrically (i.e. cut the wires and connect the new W pump to the 12V feeds). This was on a 98MY UK Turbo - not had any problems with fuel (other than splitting a new hose, which obviously wasn't up to the job) supply - holds 3 bar at tickover, runs +1.4 bar on boost (fse reg, so 4.4 bar fuel) on 550cc injectors.
