Default SSQV adjustment

The HKS SSQV has a screw-in adjuster at the rear of the unit. I'm assuming that this alters the tension in the internal spring.

How should I set it for a fluttering sound, rather than just a "Pssst" (sorry, can't do sound effects on here )

I have bought a purple insert, and am going to fit it today, but wondered if anyone had any tips for me? The screw is about half way in at the moment.

Quite possibly talking out of my smallest hole here but I thought the screw wasn't supposed to be touched?

I had the same on my GTIR and fiddled with it loads and didn't really make much difference although it would flutter a bit on low boost. IIRC someone said not to touch it so I haven't yet with my Impreza.

I preffer the flutter sound myself.

Like Edscott - I thought the SQV's were preset for the correct tension etc. I didn't think you were supposed to mess about with the screw adjustement on the back. What might be a good idea would be to mark the screw with a bit of white paint so you know what the current factory adjustment is set at before you mess about with it. That way if there is no change or a change that worsens the performance then you can revert it back to what it was originally....just an idea

Hi Steve, Got a proper one now then

The Bolt is for teh preload adjustment and wont make much difference to the sound.
Changing the inserts is the way to change the sound the SSQV makes, i cant recall which was which on my old one, IIRC the Purple one gave the loudest chirp and the silver one the loudest whoosh...

hehe

Check your phone for answerphone messages, Rob

Anyway.... the SSQV was second hand (although nearly-new) and the rear bolt was loose. How should it be adjusted? All the way in? All the way out? Mid-way?

The chirping noise is the pressure in the intake system backing through the turbo the wrong way. If you like this noise then throw the dv away and block up the holes

The bolt at the back of the valve adjusts the preload on the spring in the valve. the more preload the more pressure is needed to make the valve vent. This means more chirping at low boost.

The less preload the easier it is for the valve to open and the less chirping youll get.

If you like the chirp then whack up the preload, if you like the whoosh then back it off
