bonnet vent blanking plates

Improves cooling (you should see the heat haze that comes out of them at a standstill) but be careful what components are underneath as they will get wet, I had to move one of my (aftermarket) coils and alarm sounder.
Can't quite see how removing the blanking plates would be a security risk though...

monitor the under bonnet temps in the area before and after because some have reported they actually rise in the area (because it acts as an exhaust and all the hot air in the area is drawn to that vent)

function over form, methinks.
better off dealing with a few odd looks and the potential to look horrid than to have a hot air filter feeding the system.
isnt it...?
of course you could try ducting the air from the front of the car to the filter.
