Question Small spring - where did that come from?

I've just finished changing the plugs on my 03STi PPP and having removed the first coil pack, found a small spring sitting in the plug recess. I assumed this dropped out as the plug was uncovered by the rubber extension and that it went (for some reason) on the plug top or in the extension over the conductor spring? I then removed the rest of the plugs but found no such spring in any of them!
Where the hell did it come from and what does it do? Should the rest of the plugs have had one?
It's all back together and running but I really want to know its purpose (or was it simply something that should not have been there in the first place!
Anyone with a clue?
