Default intake temp sensor - findings...

i have fitted a digital temp sensor.

i put the sensor inside of the intercooler pipe work. it found a way in through where the BOV attachs to the pipe work here (the pics crap, but look at the blue arrow and the blue circle, the BOV sits below the circle):

the wire goes up inside and bends round towards the throttle body about 3 inches or so. it is just hanging around in there as i can obviously not fix it in there easily. it is in the air stream, blowing in the breeze!

naturally i had to do some testing.

before fire up it indicated about 18-19 deg C. after a mile or two this rose to 20,21,22.

once i got going a bit more it ran at around 22 - 25 on cruise with mild boost. just warming it up as normal.

when i got a bit further onto a good stretch i started to boot it a bit more and the temp rose on boost to around 27-28 and on cruise around 22-25 again.

about 7 miles on and i started to drive a bit more fluidly - sort of 50 - 100mph the temp got as high as 29, but on cruise at 50ish stayed around 24-25.

when i got to a nice stretch of road (dnb, think test track not too far from you on the return home for me) i gave it the full lick thru every gear and the temp only got to 32.7.

this then settled down as before to 23-26 boost dependant.

when i got home i parked in the garage to idle the car and the temp was about 22 parked. this rose steadily over a 10 minute period as far as 46.

i went back out to see how quickly it would drop. within a mile it steadily dropped back to 22-24 and on full boost in the gears to a ton reached 29. concurrant with above.

i got home again after this short two mile turnaround and put the car back in the garage, i lifted the bonnet for experimental purposes and the temp got as high as 33 in 5 mins.

what do you guys make of that.

about right?

i should think the ambient air temp is about 18-20 as with the original temp reading before startup as i explained earlier.

Sounds like similar readings to my own.....at a steady 4k on the motorway in this weather I get readings of about 30 degrees. They've generally been higher than normal recently, obviously due to Hampshires current sunny climes! This is on MY00, tek3, sti5 i/c.

Would be interesting to see the difference (if any!) an intercooler spray (as on past and current STi) would make?

PS You only put the picture up to show how clean the engine bay is!

I think it is useful to have as i wait until the intake temps have dropped before i start to boot it, So hopefully making for a DET free zone especially on these Hot days...

Your Temps seem about right

STI MY03

My Intake temp is around 26 in this heat... but that is off the SECS1004 and I thought that was "uncharged air temp" from the air box, not "charged air" after the intercooler?

Someone correct me if I am wrong...

Where have you mounted your sensor? im thinking of getting one but not sure whether to put the sensor after the air filter but before the turbo or in front of the air filter

The secs uses the standard sensor, do not know where it is placed...thought it was somewhere in the airbox/maf area...?

As I said before, I am sure it's un-charged air temp..

(it is usually 4 degs warmer than the outside temp)
