Classic MY00 Gear Box
What is the weakest link in the Classic MY00 gearbox?
I have heard that a standard box will let go after about 300ps but what is it that breaks is it the gears themselves or is it the box casing that explodes?
Also what is a better replacement for a standard MY00 gear box?
will the STi6 box be stronger or is it the same box I already have, will a Porsche 911 box fit with a bit of modifying to the bell housing as this will also have the 4wd transfer box included?
is there an off the shell box that will fit a scooby that will happily take 400+ps
Cheers
Steve

They tend to shred the teeth on 3rd, but it depends on how you drive IMO. Power isnt the killer its the Torque.
My 1st box went after 30000 miles, stripping both 3rd gears clean. Torque was around 320lbft, and had been for 14000 miles. 2nd was still alive when the engine blew at 48000 miles, and thats after a bucket load of drag racing days, and heavy abuse, it still ran fine.
Some theory is casing flex, causing the gears to come apart, and then shred, some its oil level.
On my 2nd gearbox, i put 4.5 litres of 75/90 gear oil in, cheap stuff too, and it worked faultlessy.
I now have a 6 speed in mine, as they can take considerably more punishemnt.

ps not coming to munich this year, so your beer is safe

Another vote for the six speed, I've had a 2.5 engine out twice because it had too much torque (between 395 lbft confirmed, est up to 460 lbft) and the gearbox is still going strong, albeit only after 12000 miles on a new gearbox, 3000 miles was enough of this to blow up a new uprated 5 speed gearset. I am only average on the corners but on the straights I batter the snot out of it wherever I can, but fairly smooth on the transmission.
