MY97 Throttle position sensor rwset how?
Guys please help.....
I took this off earlier and now cannot get the car to idle, it will start but not run.
How do I reset the position it should be in. I did mark the position it was in before I took it off.
When I put it on the mutlimeter I get open cirucit when its not wound up and 55 ohms when wound.
Cheers
Simon

Did you put it back on with the spring latched propery on the throttle body? Ie, when the throttle turns, the sping inside goes with it. Quit hard to get wrong though.
Other than that, just lightly adjust the 2 screws on the sensor body, with the engine off. Set the multimeter to ohms and measure it on the pins inside the tps. Middle pin for ground and the far pin (on the air filter side of the car) for the signal. Adjust the sensor body until you get 0.5 (think its +/- 0.5) and tighten the screws up.

Middle pin and top i think, but try them both. I haven't done one for a few months, so a bit rusty!
Best thing to do is record the Ohms where it is, then wind the TPS fully one way in its runners and then record the resistance. Then do ot the other way. Fully one way should produce 0. Then wind it a touch the other way until you find either 5 or 0.5, I cant remember which but ill find out in a bit.
If you search one of my other posts it will have instructions in there.
Then fire the car up and see what it does

Put the ignition onto position II without the engine started.
Test the voltage input to the ECU with respect to earth. Closed throttle should be 0.5V, open throttle 4.3V. You are allowed about 0.2V tolerance either way. Use a digital voltmeter in VOLTAGE mode.
The top adjuster is for the closed throttle, bottom for open.
At least this is for MY99/00, for your year I think it is the same but this is a good start.

John, you can do it on resistance (ohms) with the ignition off, Its just a potentiometer.
I set mine up on 98 STi using this method.
I found it easier than going to the ECU as you can adjust at the engine bay while taking a reading.
Green - the idle valve (ISCV) is a different beast.

CEL will be because its out of range.
The ECu lives under the drivers carpet, but you will have to get an ECU diagram to locate the sensor wire, and splice into it to get a reading.
Its not good to have the idle position out, because everything is relative from there. Do you get no readings from the pins in the sensor?
Search for MY99 ECU diagram or MY00 ECU diagram etc.

Hmm, its one of those I could fix if I could see it.
With the TPS in its resting position, thats closed throttle, if you wind it round against the force of the spring fully to the other way, thats the throttle fully open. It needs to be in its resting position and slightly round a tiny bit (slight open position) You obviously need the voltage / resistance to confirm what the position is.
You cant fit it the wrong way round, so thats one thing out the way.
Have you deffo tried both the outer pins? What happens when you move the sensor with the multimeter attatched - the reading should move.
I must say that using the 0-5 volts range output from the sensor is ideal, as I cant recall the range of the sensor in Ohms but Im fairly sure you need 5 ohms at rest.

Anybody know the colour of the ECU plugs B134 - 136?? That is my next step. take it from ecu and go from there. I know its pin 20 and 24 in B136, just need to find it now.

All appears to be sorted now. Car is running smoothly again.
I would like to say a big thank to all of you that helped me out on this and to SGT who faxed me the tech document on the error code allowing me to sort this out myself.
Thank you all.
Simon
