Tuolene as an Octane Booster
I was speaking to a Rally Driver about the best type of octane booster, he said that he mixed 2ltrs of tuolene with 18ltrs of optimax. He had no problems with the car but suggested extreme caution when mixing it in with optimax.
Anyone had experience of this.

Is the £25 a litre a mis-print?
I'm pretty sure that most people using it dont pay anywhere near that sort of price..........
Where did you get the figure of 125 Ron from? as that sounds high

I can buy it locally for £14 for 5Ltrs hence my initial question re. its suitability as an octane booster. I apologise to the more established members of Scooby net as this topic has been covered in some detail in the past, I have been informed. Shame Scoobynet doesn't have a 'back search machine'

It does have a back search, it's just it's a load 'o' $hite.
It used to be very code and you code search for things very easily, eeeh them were the days.

The octane of a fuel can be boosted by adding proportions of a higher octane fuel. Also available is toluene, which can be used as an octane booster in both unleaded and leaded fuels. Generally each 5% addition of toluene will increase the fuel's octane rating by one number. It is not recommended to add more than 30% of toluene to the fuel. Because of the dangers with incorrect mixing, individual motorist are advised against mixing additives with fuels without first consulting their car engine manual or their fuel supplier.

In the long and distant past we used to add Toluene to racecars. However, apparantly it also slows down the flamefront so we also added Benzene to speed this up again.
Both are very bad for you health (even years ago we wore special masks when mixing)and apparantly give you cancer.

Stick with NF Booster for simplicity from pentland components in Scotland..... I have the details if anyone wants - very nice bunch of people
It really is a lot of hassle to cart around this or any alternative fuel type
and you can get it from £10 a bottle if you buy a case (of 30).......... or very reasonable prices if you want less than this
Stuff's RRP is £13 (Inc Vat) but the more you buy the less you pay

They dont really add much of a margin on the stuff so I dont think they'd be too chuffed if people rang for say 1 bottle of NF Booster - better to order in bulk as its that much cheaper - even 10 bottles is cheaper....... the more bottles ordered the less the admin hassle for Richard and his company

I found that 10% toluene had much the same effect as N.F. and I also found that 13% of an equal toluene and methanol mix with super or Optimax was pretty good. To get best gains you would need to remap for that fuel and it is not practical to carry round supplies of toluene or methanol. Also the Lambda numbers for such a fuel are different to petrol so unless you have an EGT guage you are in unknown teritory. Cost of picking up a piston or just doing an exhaust valve was not justified by the gains or savings. My conclusion in the end was that it was cheaper, safer and more convenient to stick with bulk purchases of N.F which I get from Roger Clark Motorsport.
