bugeye cel
please help
recently ive noticed when i boot my 2001my wrx i can smell a strong eggy cat smell and today i pulled away at a roundabout not too aggresive and the cel light came on and has now stayed on tried a search but most advice for ecu codes etc is for pre bugeye
ive tried the ignition on/off five times to see if the cel will go out but its still on is?
the car is high miles but full subaru history etc (motorway miles)
is there a flash sequence to give me the fault code?
im thinking its either cat (was gonna replace with pipe anyway ) or o2 sensor thats faulty maybe something else? would a faulty maf sensor bring on the cel?
if it is the o2 sensor or maf will i need to reset the ecu or will it clear once new part is fitted etc?
regards
nick

Take it to the dealers and they will give you the fault code, Sort the problem and then they must re set the ECU

The bugeye (and the MY01 in particular) seem to throw up a lot of CEL's for some reason........ask Chris Singleton !!
get the car to a dealer with a a "select monitor" to see what codes are stored. P0420 is the "cat below efficiency" code which used to plague me. The Camshaft position error is also a good one !!
It Depends on how well you get on with your dealer !! Stan Palmers here in Carlisle never charged me to stick a "select monitor" on and see what the codes were....some dealers do make a charge.
best of luck!
Midlife..
PS you didn't mention any mods to the car

I had a CEL a couple of months ago and it turned out to be camshaft sensor, cleaned the sensor and reset the ECU and it was ok for while but it has started to happen again only at high RPM, the CEL flickers on and off. Do you have experience of how to fix this? Also how serious is this problem? The car is a standard MY01 JDM STI.
Thanks,
Paul.

Hi Paul
I'm way from being an expert at anything it's just that my MY02 tends to throw a Camshaft error whilst overtaking....
biggest killer in Cumbria of young males, apart from mental health problems, is road deaths ....... so High RPM guaranteed !!
I'd think About Prospoprt in Stockport if worried.. especially if the Knocklink is active !

just a silly question does this mean my car is in limp home mode with cel on?

There is no "flash code" for the CEL... current and old codes are stored on the ECU and need a "select monitor" or something like a SECS to read.
Limp home mode is pretty Obvious AFAIK as the ECU cuts in at 3000 RPM and 0,8 bar boost making the car completely undrivable at anything less than "limp home" speeds
Flashing CEL's usually mean that some limit on one of the sensors has been breached, maybe a boost spike or the MAF (in Error) has read a large airflow which the ECU can't handle.
Dealer should be able to help (as no mods under warranty).. but loads of scooby specialists about . Just wondered where you are

Damn I wonder why I had 16 coil packs on the shelf & they hadn't shifted.......all for bugeyes too.
If you go to change the spark plugs, the black "*****" looking object on top of them is indeed a coil pack.......
