Default Whats caused this with my plugs ?



certainly number 3 looks bad, was covered in oil too !!

Anyone know what the cause could be

Out of interest are those in order of the cylinders i.e. #1, #2, #3 and #4 ??

Yep

I should state also that its not my Scoob I would be really worried if it was !!

they are out of my Golf Mk3 1.6, done 70k miles

LOL, apparently thats what VW put in them as standard

Not sure how long they have been in, but ive put some new ones in today, along with new oil & filter etc

Oil I took out was black

could be, could be a piston ring too

Will check the plug after a few hundred miles, and see if the new one gets fouled

looks like you might have melted a piston, rotate endine to bring piston to TDC and look down with torch to see what you can see, it's not a good sign.

It looks like it's been running too lean, so would suggest you do compression check, if okay, fit new plugs and monitor, if looks similar then it's deffo lean. Possibly get the fuel injectors (assuming its injected) checked.

Cheers for the replies

I did try and look down with a torch earlier on today, I have fitted new plugs, and will be monitoring over the next few hundred miles or so

It has a single injector Mono-Motronic or something like that, the injector is very noisy (I thought it was tappets at first, till I stuck my head on the block so to speak)

and when I removed the air box that covers the injector, there was a few bits of what looked like hard carbon
