The version 3(97) and version 4 (98) cars shared the indentical phase 1.5 engines. They can be distinguished by the fact that they have the later bonnet, early bumpers and astraight intercoolers with a remote, rather than bolt-on dump valve.
The 98 cars differed by having the later (forester) interior with a digital mileometer and white dials.
You can check chassis numbers on the SIDC Site, FAQ.
Having established that you have the right years, I must add that a Jap WRX or STI ECU, will not work on a UK car. You need a UK ECU

Thanks for the reply Hol
my car has white dials, with a digital mileometer/total mileage
interior is black seats with white stripes on side.
intercooler is straight, and the dump valve is conneted to hoses, not direct onto the intercooler.
the ECU is off a 98 UK car, but mapped with higher fuel/boost
so sounds like this should fit?
Cheers

Andrew...
Andrew...
I sold a PPP ECU from a 2000 car and it plugged straight in and ran. Even the alarm was unaffected!.
However, the 98 cars (which yours is really an MY98 if you have the forester dash) http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm - section 1.2. ) may have been differeent.

ahem... Not that this thread has anything to do with me... (Hello James...)
If the ECU controls the immobiliser (which I guess it must), do you lose that function when switching to a power FC ? (which is what I'm doing, and why my 98 UK ECU with PE daughter board/map is available.(soon)..)
Ta,
Mark
