Default Water Spray on STI

Hello All, i know in general what the waterspray does but anybody actually use it?

Also what sort of power do you get and how long does it last?

yes, it saves opening the bonnet to wash the dead flys
off the intercooler,.........dosent it!

No intercooler water spray gives you extra power above the book bhp figure.
It will help you reach the std bhp figure by assisting the intercooler to reduce the charge temp on a hot day or if you've been sitting in traffic.

If its the UK WRX STi you have then the spray works for 3 secs every push of the button.
Unless you have a charge temp output then its only worth using when pulling away after being held up at lights/ traffic etc.
The JDM version is allegedly a lot more sophisticated as it will automatically spray according to certain temps (inlet/charge?) and boost levels.

It does.

The latest JDM Twin Scroll models have it as a mappable option.

Hence my IC spray spends a lot of time on and I need to top the bottle up nearly everytime i fill up with petrol.

I've found mine (on MY03STi PPP) does half of sod-all for most of the time I've had the car. I did notice the difference during the very hot spell we've just had - but it wasn't much!

Probably useful for track days. Apart from that, the most fun I've had is when I got a mate to "'ere, 'ave a look behind this intercooler" and pressed the button... Childish, but a laugh.

so its not for removing flys
better stop putting fairy liquid in with it then
still, my intercooler is the cleanest around

i did use mine a fair bit when travelling to le mans. Especially over 80 as the scoop stops being as efficient then, oh and when sitting in traffic too!

Nathan,

Does yours actually do anything useful, then, or is it still just really there for decoration and to add a bullet point to the spec sheet?

I can't help but feel that if it's that useful, better to leave the water tank empty and save the weight...

How's about fitting a Spec C water bottle in the boot? Thats what I would/will do Will last far longer than a standard piddly little thing!

have got mine linked up to my SECS unit, water sprays at user desired boost level.

You can feel the difference and watching the inlet temps on the SECS you can see the temps dropping.

Yes mate it does.

When Bob was mapping my car it was running intake temps far lower than without it on. We were able to add more ignition advance as a result which is a GOOD thing

Hm... not, 'good until you run out of water' then? I presume the ECU is able to retard timing enough not to suffer engine damage if the water tank runs dry - right?

while we are on the subject.

what do you fill yours up with. i live in a very hard water area. do you use distilled water or just from the tap.

i dont want the line from the boot and the spary nozzle to get bunged up.

Yep, without doubt.

As soon as temps go up too high the ECU would back things off.

Not that I've ever let my bottle run out. There is a warning light on the dash which starts to flick on when the bottle gets low or empty.

Just tap water here in the summer, it runs out too fast to worry about things getting bunged up

Any carbonates in the water will only come out on evaporation, or which there will be a small amount at the intercooler - and the normal passage of cr@p and rain will keep that from accumulating. Almost none, or none at all, will come out in the bottle or in the pipe - there's no evaporation taking place there of any significance.

The inlet temp your SECS units shows it what is seen at MAF sensor... Before the Intercooler... so its not actually showing anything to do with the IC spray. Just a thought

yes. you connect up two wires to the pump via a relay (got my local garage to do it), then you go into the menu and select the psi or bar that you want the spray to activate at.

On very hot days I select a much lower boost, and on cool days I select higher. You can also select it to a much higher limit so it doesn't kick in at all.

When it activates you can hear the relay and pump. It keeps spraying until you drop below your desired boost.
