CEL Light Problem

CEL Light Problem
i have a very strange problem, if i connect the 2 black connectors under the steering wheel and put the car into the 'on' position, the CEL light comes on, and does not go off. it just stays on along with oil pressure warning light, etc... only ABS and airbag lights go off. when i start the car it goes off. no flashing.
very strange = i also tried the ecu reset thing today. connected the black and green connectors. i put the key into the 'on' position and there were funny noises from the engine, but the CEL light still remains on. only the ABS and airbag lights go off after a while. fully depressed pedal, then half, then switched on the car (CEL light turned off) drove for a while but no flasshing CEL light to show resetted ECU. anyone know what could be going on?

i only seem to have one pair of unconnected black connectors under the driver's side dash. heres a piccy - one has a single red wire and the other a single white wire. is this the correct pair of connectors?
i have also included a pic of the dash display with them connected, it is the same as without, with the CEL light on continously. whats the deal? i cant check the codes!

Is the light on when the engine is running ? It will always be on if you just switch on the ignition.
If it stays on when running and the connectors are disconnected then you do have a fault that needs checking for.

It sounds to me like the ECU is not registering that you've connected the blacks. Sounds like the greens are working, as it went into diagnostic mode when they were connected. Is it possible there's a fault with the blacks? Maybe the metal parts inside aren't making a good contact when plugged together, or maybe there's a break in the wire(s) between the connector(s) and the ECU...?
