Car wont start. What does the symbol on the dash mean?

Car wont start. What does the symbol on the dash mean?
Please could you help me? I have not long had scooby and now it wont start, on the dash it says check engine and shows a light that looks like an exhaust with heat rising! Please could you let me know what this is as i have no manual and have no idea where to start looking to solve it. Cheers paul

What do i do now????
I went back to my car at about 12 last night and she started up straight away with no sign of the light or trouble. I am thinking of putting a new system on anyway ( any advice on what is best?) how does de catting effect an mot? also could someone please tell me how the car would be picking this up, where are the sensor etc? BY the way its a WRX 95 import.
