Default 2nd dipstick near turbo

This may sound like a silly question, but what is the second dipstick near the turbo for!? Surely it can't be for the turbo as the turbo gets its oil from the engine oil??? Incidentally the dipstick is dry and i have a metalic knocking nopise from near the turbo when i get to about 2,500 rpm.

If your lucky it might be the heat shield a little loose.

The gearbox oil is very clear and thin, so it can be difficult to see on the dipstick. Also, the car must be on a perfectly level surface or you will not get a true reading.
