Unhappy Is my turbo dying ??

I have a MY01 with a few mods in place, and all has been running fine apart from the last few weeks.

Basically I never boot the car untill the oil is at temp, but even when it is, the first once or twice on WOT the turbo sounds like a lollipop stick in a kids bike wheel ,if you know what I mean, but after that its fine.

It runs full boost in 1st ,2nd and sometimes 3rd, but 4th & 5th are a joke. The boost seems to start fine but then its very erratic and starts pulseing.

It gets to 17 psi & then drops to 10psi, back to 17psi and so on.

I tried my best to clean the boost solenoid, but couldnt get the bottom pipe off, and have checked everywhere for leaks, but the sound makes me think my turbo is on its last legs.

Can anyone offer advice as to what it could be or what I should be looking for.

Cheers

Phil

Having trouble Phil ??

As you know, I'm new to all this so the only help I can offer is to bump you back to the top. Hope you get it sorted.

sorry to hear this Phil.
not saying this is the problem.
but read a thread that erratic boost is a trade mark of dodgy Maf.
but turned out plug leads cured problem.
(disclaimer . only what i have read in past and under no circumstances must I or corrado boy be held responsible for second hand information )

I had the same fault on mine, took me ages to solve it & i didnt expect it to be this!
Check your oil level, if its on the Max line, drain some out to between min & max, clean out the pipes to the boost solernoid & do a ECU reset, then give it a go!

checked the oil, and its fine. the ECU was reset a month or so ago after a decat, and as you know with the bugeye it cant be reset without using a select monitor or similar.

my only other option is pretty drastic basically I've got 2 months let on my warrenty, so if I cant find why its happenning do I thrash the car so that if it is the turbo thats at fault it will blow, and claim on the warrenty ??

this is a last resort really, as it may cause problems in the future.

the car runs really well apart from this and its really annoying ...

any more ideas ??

Phil, it's already failing so get it in to the dealer. I'd possibly get an independent specialist to diagnose the fault 1st so you have some leverage if the dealer tries to get out of it, and if they're +90% sure what's at fault get it down and insist on a warranty repair. With the symptoms you have described there obviously is something going wrong, so nip it in the bud.

Good luck.

Phil i think you will find the actuator is the pressed steel affair with a steel rod about 5mm in dia coming out of it on Turbo.
i had an RS turbo a lot of years ago , had a problem with poor power
turned out the actuator had a weak spring not allowing turbo to reach correct boost

Alrite Phil

I would definately get some1 to have a look at it!!

Is there anyone that you could borrow an actuator off? Saying that dont know how much of a pig it is!!

Remember if you want to take it to Subaru drop me a mailand i'll try to get the ramps as discussed at the karting!

Have a good un!

Phil,

I wouldn't try playing with the turbo actuator - they are generally fit & forget by the manufacturer and are generally sealed units plus probably made so that it can be seen if they've been tampered with (i.e. good get-out of warranty for SUK)

Looking around a few bits it seems like it could be a sensor problem - according to the bits I've seen, erroneous idling, engine stalls and poor performance are symptoms of a MAF problem (can fail at high or low flow rates which might be why yours is grotty in higher gears i.e. higher rpm = higher air flows) but it may be other sensors...

Probably best to have it checked to see if there's any fault codes logged in the ECU and then try a warranty claim...

Good luck

Andy

i have to just replace my boost solenoid on my MY01 bugeye, mine failed totally and I now have a 3port fitted.
Way I tested mine if you are brave and very very careful, I take it you have a boost gauge, remove the pipe to the actuator and very very slowly put her on boost without the pipe it will boost to full as in danger level but if you take her straight of boost it will prove if its the turbo or the boost solenoid, This will be harder in your case as you will need to do this in third and forth gears.

Tricky one Phil. Technically your warranty went a while ago due to the mods, so trying to thrash it to death before the cover technically expires may not get you the free fix you're hoping for.

Unfortunately it's realistically impossible to diagnose the noise you describe via the power of the internet, it could be caused by any number of things and really needs looking at by someone who knows the cars.

Thanks for the replies as always guys.

It does seem intermittent ,as I've been out for a good run for most of the day on various types of road and the boost has been fine. However, after driving steadily for any lenth of time, if I apply boost I get the noise again for a short period of time, then it dissappears.

I'm a bit reluctant to try the solenoid trick that was mention, because as GM correctly states, my warranty dissappeared ages ago, but on the other hand it would only take a day to get it back standard

I always wanted to have a look down at ScoobyClinic, I think maybe now is the time

this is a known problem with MY01 bugeyes, only happens when you do drag starts, no cure yet either

only down side to having over 300 horses
