try the tests youve stated yourself,, dip clutch etc..

then repost it may help...

it would help to know if the noise was there under load / not under load etc..

also check your tyres!!! it has been known

Have a WY03 WRX with a whinning noise problem. Noticable at 62-64mph - noise sounds similar to when you rub your finger around the rim of a wine glass, only a deeper ocatve.

After having it in with 2 garages they finanlly beleived there was an issue after I took them for a test drive. Appears I need a new transaxle which will be fitted next Mon.

Does this sound like your problem? Get a garage to get it on a ramp and spin the wheels and see if the noise is still there.

JMK, I have the same noise at the same speed you describe. I also have an additional noise when under engine braking conditions (going down throught the gears). It sounds like nails in the gearbox. My local 'hampshire' dealer (we all know who) was good enough to send an engineer out with me for a good test drive. He said he could hear the 62MPH whinning noise but would not get authorisation under warranty to strip the gearbox to see what's going on as it's not bad enough. He said let's "wait and see" and if it gets worse to some back! For the bag-of-nails noise, he said it was "all the heat sheilds around the exhaust" and not to worry about it (I am very technically minded and IMHO was nothing like a heat sheild noise). As you can imagine this was not the response I was looking for.

I've since had to switch main dealers (due to the service) and luckily a new one has opened in Dorset. Their junior engineer has heard the problems and I am booking it in for them to have a closer look shortly as an experienced (ex Chaplegate) technician has just recently joined them - I've been waiting for him to be signed-up.

I'll be letting them know about your problem, just in case.

-Steve.

Stevecrisp

Mine was in the dealers twice before I managed to get them to go on a test drive with me. Initially they thought it was wind noise but I kept going on able transaxle issues due to a post I read on Scoobynet months ago (well done Scoobynet) and eventually they got in on a ramp to see if wind noise was the issue.

When they got the wheels spinning the noise was far, far worse and over a much greater spread of speed. Work being done by Cheam Motors next week - I'll let you know how II get on.

Oh by the way, the noise happened regardless of gear, decelerating or accelerating, although most obvious on a constant throttle.

I also have a decelerating noise at much lower speeds. Although it’s not quite same as you describe, it sounds like something to do with the transmission. Hopefully it's related to the same fault and will be fixed next week.

Only thing that did worry me was their response when I asked about the engine overheating whilst it's on a ramp as they don’t have a rolling road facility with a large fan. Their response was, "not to worry sir, the car's fan will stop it from over heating." Hope he's right.

see here.. also an MY00 (mine). Turned out to be gearbox.
If your engine number is anywhere near mine it may of been a bearing batch problem.

Wink

Had my MY00 in to same infamous "hampshire" dealers this time last year,41,000 miles, sounded like a wheel bearing, except that it was only apparent under load in 4th & 5th. Noise and road speed were similar to your description. It was fixed on the 2nd attempt, seem to remember that they replaced the mainshaft and associated bearings. Seems that 3rd gear is weak on the 5 speed, which made mine a bit strange! "Dealer" reckoned it had never needed to strip one before. Managed to refrain from including the phrase "bollocks" in my reply.

My whine was not a typical drone either, at first I thought it was a noise from behind the speedo. More of a whirring then a droning.

But then the main culprit was a very small bearing (labeelled NSK HR 303/22 Japan M), so it would not be that harsh anyway.

Mechanic local to me done it as follows :

Gearbox Remove / Refit - 5 Hours @ 27.50 per Hour
Gearbox Strip/Inspect/Repair/Materials - £196 (included 4 hours Labour at whatever rate the Gearbox Specialist charged, about £40 per hour)

Total approx £391

P.S I had to wait about 2-3 weeks to get it done and in that time the noise certainly became more apparent. It's a shame we are at opposite ends of the country, cause I could of had a listen.

I took the oppurtunity to have an ADL Blueprint Clutch fitted as well at a cost of £245

I get the same noise but it's not all the time (52 Plate) - only on motorways though and like I said it's not all the time, I thought it was a wind noise at first. Is this a known issue?

Never fear - can help you all out. Have just had same noise (speed dependant whine on cruising, not related to clutch position, only heard at certain speeds) diagnosed on my car. Not yet fixed! Apparently, as told by garage (proper one, NOT a dealer!) is almost certainly an early wheel bearing failure. (rear wheel in my case)
