Thumbs up Gearbox noises

Hi all, I have a 93 jap import impreza and for the past 6 months or so it has been making a sort of wining noise when in gear and when i take my foot off the throtle and clutch. It sounds like you can hear the cogs grinding inside.
I have checked the dipstick for the gear oil and its half full would it help if i change the oil?
So i was just wondering what it is and if the gear box is on its way out, also where is the best place to buy a new, reconditioned one for an import?
Also if i do need to replace it would an sti box fit and would i need any extra parts etc?

Cheers for ur help guys James

Sounds like the box is on its way out.
It is weather you want to go for a rebuild or not?
Grade A I would have thought would be the best place for the box.
As for sti Stuff - I dunno?

Maybe not i had the same problem .Theres a nut on the gearbox which i tightend which stopped the noise last year.Theres a few nuts on the gearbox so to discribe it. Its the one thats holding a pin in place, surrounded by a slim cog type thing.Sorry thats the best i can do. They do come loose i took this info from a breaker i know. Its worth a try anyway.

In my opinion i strongly disagree with the above. Grade A sold me a gearbox and diff for £1175 and it lasted 3 weeks before developing the problems that you are suffering from. They offer NO warranty and do not want to know. This has left me with a noisy gearbox and no money ! Grade A can **** my ****

Personally i would use APi engines who will offer you a 3 month warranty or 6 months if you let them rebuild your box.

You can contact them on: 01926 614333

Had a whine on my MY00 box and it was the bearings in the centre diff casing. They are tappered bearing which if I am correct mount in the casting using an outer shell similar to tappered wheel bearings.

The case hardening had gone on the smaller of the 2 and hence the wear/noise.

Cost me £196 for the repair by a gearbox specialist (4 hours strip/inspect/repair/materials), plus 5 hours labour @ £27.50 per hour for my mechanic to take the box out and refit.
