Question Hydraulic cam follower question.

My mates MY 94 WRX started to tap like mad on startup
last night. Anyway to cut a long story short and the change
of a few underpants, on the 4 startup the sound stopped.

It seems like when he moved the car the night before the
cam follower was cold and stuck in it's compressed state then
after it warmed it sprang back open- does this sound right?

He's been advised by a few engine builders that carbon can build up
and cause this, They have suggested a heavy duty engine flush and
then obviously quality 15-50 oil.

Has anyone had any experiences like this and is the flush a good idea
or will the follower keep sticking?

Any info would be great.

Default

i occasionally get the same,,,

i believe the way to eliminate it is to increase the revs to 3000 rpm for i minute, if after that it stil taps, i believe replacement is the only way,

mine sometimes does it, but if i turn off and restart its fine,

i believe its due toeither iol starvaton to the hydraulic lifter, or a blocked hole preventing oil from escaping

as you already stated a good flush ,, or a hydralic tappet cleaner applied to your oil would be worth a shot

if neither of these work replacement of all the lifters is usually your only option
