WRX 03 engine sounds horrible
i have raised this problem before but still no sorted...on start up engine sound ok but has soon has the throttle is pressed the engine sounds like a bag of old bolts rattling for about 3 secs then disapears any ideas..could this be the oil pump? car has done 7k and has done this for the last 2k...powerman
Fuel pump comes into life, could it be the cold start & the injectors you are listening too?
If it did sound like a bag of bolts that's more likely big end failure though I can't imagine that in a 7k miler unless the oil went missing.
Have you taken it back to a garage for them to listen to?

Been back to the dealer but its one of those faults that only happens when the engine is started first thing in the morning and is so short in duration that if you miss it you have to wait a long time for the next listen.i was thinking of trying some fresh oil 10w40 and see if that makes any difference and if that dont work i thought if i had a few suggestions thrown at me i could take it back to the dealer and leave it with them, alternativly give a time and maybe what ever it is finally gives up the ghost.
Is possible to tell if it is the Big Ends whilst the engine is warm with an experienced ear,,,,

Any dealer should offer to take the car off you overnight and give you a courtesy car. Then when they start it first thing they can see what the problem is. The best thing to do would be to drop it off the night before, collect another car to get home in and meet them early the next morning back at the garage to show them the problem yourself.
Hi,
I know this is a a daft question but have you check the oil in your car recently. These WRX03's seem to suffer from high oil usage. Maybe yours is excessively low.
Does your engine oil pressure light remain on longer than usual on the first time start?
My old MR2 used to make that noise once when I put in some Castrol 0W-50 which I thinks was too thin.
Either way, oil change sounds good. Put some Shell Helix 10W-40 in, its the best.

Thanks chaps
I did leave it with them a while a go but they didnt hear any thing, possibly due to being stored in the warm workshopthey said, but i think I will try your suggestion or alternativly i may ask them to call at mine. The oil consumption has been a little bit more than i expected but i hoped it would improve as the engine settles down or is this not the case? 2 litres per 4k miles

I have a MY03 WRX with 10,000 miles. On cold mornings mine also sounds like it has no oil in it (though this is not the case because I check the level every time I fill it with Petrol).
I just figure that is what it sounds like cold, and if it goes bang it has a nice warranty!
