Default engine oil levels??

I checked the engine oil today and it is quite low, but what viscosity and brand should i use to top it up? Do i just pour it straight in until it reaches the upper level mark?

Car is wrx03 5000miles.

Thanks

Use it as an excuse to change the oil.

ALWAYS use synthetic oil and keep reciepts.Unless it was changed last week

In my book, your better off changing the oil an filter to keep your car running like it should. If its used a bit of oil and your unsure of last service..
DO IT!
If you have a full history of the car and servicing bills.Renew/top up with mobil 1 or similar..
Hope this helps.

Good idea.

ALWAYS use synthetic oil
Wrong answer.

If it only has 5K miles on it, it's too soon for a full synth. A good semi synth like Shell Helix Plus 10w/40 is about the best option.

The time for full synthetic is once the engine has 7-10,000 miles on it.
