Default piston slap

Hi Guys and gals,
I have a slight gurgling knocking noise on cold up to 2500 revs that gets quiter as the engine warms up, i've been told that i need an engine rebuild but the car runs fine no noticeable drop in power and no increase in oil consumption. Is this just piston slap and somebody trying to make a few bucks. The car is a 1997 wrx import run on optimax no knocklink fitted.
Cheers
Edd (bricking a rebulid)

I have a MY03 that is making the exact noise in that sound clip, is it not supposed to do this, and should i take it back to the dealer ?

Its only done 4000 miles, and it only does it when it cold ??? after 10 mins i can't hear it

If you have piston slap; it will at some given point need to be replaced, whether you decide to do 1 piston, all pistons or all pistons & crank is down to you as a customer & how long you are going to keep the car.

Generally if the sound doesn't go after the oil is warm, get it done immediately. Again to listen to the noise is best from cold.....
