My mates ,just picked his car up from a garage 95 wrx, and when he starts it from cold, there is a sort of knocking sound ,not that loud for about 10 seconds,as i am new to scoobs myself, dont know what it is, but he just needed some info so the garage dont fob him off, the car was just serviced, so could the oil used be to thin?, there is no noise when its warmed up etc
any ifo would be great and i can pass it on

Could be any one of a few harmless things provided it goes away when the engine is warm. A lot of Subarus sound a bit rattly when they are cold.

I noticed mine was knocking a bit on start up for a couple of weeks then it decided to turn a big end shell at 5500rpm.
Tell him to take it easy before getting it checked out properley, I just got mine back today with a new crank, conrods, oilpump and big end shells/bearings.
Could have been worse though.

 

don't hydraulic lifters sound noisy when cold/at start up??? could perhaps be that! worth him mentioning it to the dealer and making sure they note the complaint so if things do go wrong its on record. in fact, probably worth getting an independent garage's opinion too.
