Timing belt how to change
Hi
Can anyone help me about changing a timing belt on a 2.0 Sport not a turbo. What milage do people recommend it be changed.
Is there any special timing marks or tools i need to change.
Any help would be a great help.
Thanks Brian

replace timing belt
i replaced mine, EJ20 turbo, best to do it around 100thK
i'm almost up for my second change, at 236thK now ['89 RS legacy]
on the quad cam, remove the radiator, then the front engine covers
you'll need a special tool to remove the cranck wheel, we made one
release tension from the hydraulic belt tensioner [or replace it]
ideal to replace the harmonic balancers at the same time [pulleys the belt runs around]
on quad cam clamp the 2 cam pulleys together so they don't move or note the notches on the cam pulleys
add new belt, put it back together

Have you done this sort of thing before?........& got experience of this?
Just seen an awful lot of people attempt it & put it the belt on & then bend the valves...
If not sure get a mechanic to do it...

You don't need a special tool to take off the crank pulley put it in 1st, put handbreak on get somebody to press the brake pedal aswell and use a long breaker bar. 2 man job really I would never clamp the the cam sprockets together just align them up before you put the belt on. You might need someone to hold them while you tension the belt.

Taking it to a main dealer is no guarantee of success either.
Had mine replaced at a Osbourne's which has since closed. Car juddered at idle. Took it back. "Nothing wrong."
4 visits to another dealer "Days of Chelmsford" - "ECU shows no faults"
Finally the third dealer I tried (Wilsons - Chadwell Heath ) found that one of the pulleys was one tooth out of position. So, for 6 months the timing has been shot.
Here's hoping there's no lasting damage.
Good luck
