Default Help..!! How to lower Emission level ...failed MOT

Further to my previous post, i put my car in for MOT, and sure enough it failed on emissions.

Car is my93wrx ..with decatted centre and prodrive back box, and non- standard airbox and filter....also has dawes fitted...set to 15psi max. Running NUL.

When my car was put on emission test, i mentioned about the need to have the right data, tester said, here it is on the machine Subaru Impreza 2ltr turbo. That was the data he used.

Readings came out as follows ..

1st fast idle run CO limit 0.30 actual 0.47 lambda 1.01 ---- FAIL

2nd fast idle run CO limit 0.30 actual 0.32 lambda 1.00 ---- FAIL

idle CO limit 0.50 actual 0.11 ------- PASS

HC readings were well under limit 200 actual 29

Does anyone know what i can do to reduce the emission levels ..???? or know of any links to the specific data i can present the MOT tester with that shows im exempt..??????

i have still got my standard zorst which i intend to replace, and also my standard airbox and filter..... anyone know of anything else i can do to reduce the emission levels further...???????

Thanx a million - eagerly awaiting replys

Frank

hi

have you tried warming the engine up for atleast half hour before the mot?
try replacing the induction kit with the original air box and filter and try runing it on optimax before for a couple days and some injection cleaner other then that you might have to resort to putting the cat back in

Snap!! Same thing happened to me today! Keep your eye on this thread:
http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=303688

Just in case there is any info that you could use. What were your Natural idle results, as your car is a MY93 it shouldnt have to pass the two speed test.

Tell the tester that if he cant find an exact model match then it must be done on the non-cat test. AFAIK

Your car should of passed the emission test because the Data in the Mot data base for the 2000 TURBO is for uk/european spec cars.
Your model is a WRX which was not officially imported until 2001/02 (?)

The data base only lists the Following models...
2000 TURBO and P1.

No RB5,22B, WRX or STI is mentioned or listed.

The testers manual clearly states that if a car fails the BETS test then a full cat test is only done if an EXACT MODEL match is found. (up to 1995).
Cars from MY 96 have to under go a default test with tighter limits.

I would go back and ask the tester how he came to the conclusion that yours failed.

Steve,

Are you talking about my case or Franks?

What is the test that should be done on cars pre95? The tester is a friend of mine and to be fair was doing his best to pass it. But he said the minimun non-cat test relied on the Natural idle test, limit 0.5% and my car had a result of 1.92%. In Franks case I think his car has passed but I'm fooked

Sorry but i thought you both had the same problem and year of car.All cars upto 1995
if they fail the BETS test and a exact match can't be found are tested on default limits.
HC 1200ppm
CO upto 3.5%
Lamda (no limits)

all measured on idle speed.

Its in the testers manual and your friend should know about it!!

With those figures it is a pass. Becuase you have a jap import they should be testing to generics which has a lot higher limits than the UK versions. It is not a Impreza 2000 so they should not have put that into the computer.

Cheers for these replies ....... my car was imported in March 2001. (my93wrx)

I did inform the tester that the car was a jap spec wrx, and that it was not the same data set, he wasnt convinced, maybe he genuinely thought i was trying to blagg him.. (he used 'subaru' .-- 'impreza' -- 2000 turbo)

What would be the correct test for this car ......???

If anyone has the precise details, and could email it me, my address is it_smee_again@hotmail.com

im going to put my standard zorst on, and standard airbox over the weekend and have it re-tested next week, but any info before then would be well appreciated. Does fuel type help??? ie optimax or NUL..??

any other ideas on what i can do..???

Any further comments are much appreciated.

Thanks for the help ...over the weekend i have returned my car to standard, all bar the 'prodrive' backbox.... am not sure if putting the standard one one will make a difference, unless someone can confirm for me.

So for now im running standard zorst, with the straight thru zorst, and air filter back to standard and fuel cut lifter removed and back to standard MAP. I have also switched to Optimax to see if that helps.

Like the other guy, the tester in my case, was in fairness was trying to be helpful.
Im putting the car back in on wednesday. And fingers crossed will be ok.

So, if the cars fails the BETS test, it must be done on less stringent test ..????? ie a de-cat one.??? D8UGF?????

Once again thanx for your help.

Frank,
As far as I have gathered from quicksprint's post, if an exact match for the car cannot be found i.e Impreza WRX, not turbo 2000 as that is the Uk model, then the default test must be run which has the limits quicksprint posted. Mine goes back on thurs so will let u know how I get on.

Judging by ur results u would pass this test without having to take all ur stuff off. Its hard to try and force ur point with someone thats being helpfull, but the only WRX that shows up is the bugeye-on ones, so there is no definite match for the car.

Hope this helps

Dougie

Ps thanks quicksprint

Pps as far as I know its date of manufacture, not import, that counts

No problems m8,hope you get a pass.

Luckily i am in the right trade...........any more questions?

steve

p.s the date of import is irrelevant for the MOT test....only the build date/model year is needed.

Is there some confusion here between MY2000 which the car isn't, and 2000cc capacity, which it is?

Just a thought.
