Question Odometer packed up?

I have a 94 wrx my problem is that my speedo reads fine, my trip meter work's but my odometer is not clocking up any mileage, I no it sound's like a good thing not gaining any mileage, but I would rather it worked.

Is it cable driven or electric?

Ive looked but dont no where to start

Cheers

I have the exact same problem on MY95 WRX. Odo started slowing down then stopped.
Am interested to see if anyone knows about this.

Question

Ok then Ive got my instrument cluster off and the speedometer turn's out to be cable driven, which I suppose mean's that the odometer is geared inside the cluster?

Am I right in saying this and theres no way I can fix it, beside's getting a new cluster or having it repaired professionaly?

;(

Thumbs up

Success I think,

Benno I took my instrument cluster out and it's cable driven, took the casing off to expose the dials, popped the speedo needle off, took the two black screw's on the face of the dial off and removed the mph dial and undid the four on the rear which hold the speedo in place, Two chubby one's and two which go through the circuit.

It should now come out of the instrument cluster no problem.

Studied it for an hour or two before deciding to dismantle it..

Could not see any visible wear or damage to any of the cog's, so I got my screwdriver out

There should be 2 blue coloured spindles and one screw which holds them both in place with a bracket

There's actually the smallest of vertical movement from this bracket, I tried it in both places by pushing it up and down and amazingly it's working now, after pushing it down the smallest bit, I guess there was slight wear after all only it's not visible

I took photo's and will post them up later if anyone's not sure what I mean

There's a problem with taking speedo needles off as anyone who has fitted a Lockwood dial set will tell you. The recommended way is to lift the needle over the zero stop pin and see where it settles then mark it and pull it off. Then after you've done all your work the idea is you put it back where it camne from and re-tension it back over the stop pin.

In practice it works about one in 6 goes. you'll be lucky if it works again. however from your description of the problem I think it's screwed anyway. You'll need to contact a specialist WRX breaker and buy a 'new' speedo.

We might have one, if you call l'll check on Monday. David API

PS if it does work after you've done the bizz go buy a lottery ticket with luck like that you can't fail.

Cheers for the info guys. Wouldn't mind seeing the pics pitstop before i decide whether or not to attempt it myself. If you mail them to me I can post them up if you can't.
David, what is the going rate for a secondhand WRX speedo and would I be able to set the Odometer to the current milage??
Could you be a good opportunity to fit some lockwood dials as well.
