I'm just replacing the maf sensor on my 98Type R, do I need to reset my ECU and if so how do I do that?

Sorry to sound thick but have never done it before.

Cheers

Yes, ECU reset is necessary.

Here for details on how to do it.

If you don't reset the ECU, the car will run on the MAF values it learned from the old sensor, until it slowly re-learns on the new one.

Resetting the ECU cuts out all the time spent re-learning, which is good all-round for the car.
