Pipercross panel filter?

Happy new year all.I have a Pipercross panel filter fitted to my 99 classic turbo, have been reading a few threads about filters and am wondering if this filter is known to cause any problems with the MAF sensor? Forgive my ignorance but what is this sensor and how does it become damaged and damage your engine.The filter has been fitted for about 6 months and the car runs great.
