Big whining noise my97

When I accelerate hard and get upto a high speed then slow down with or with out brakes my car makes a very loud whining noise as if something were almost grinding, I am very scared!

Any help concerning this prob, anybody have a similar noise going on.

what happens if you accelerate slowly up to high speed and then back off?

It still makes the noise but only if you deccelerate from a high speed.
