legacy 2ltr turbo estate

Strictly speaking, mate, you don't want to run it on 95Ron fuel.
Scoobies work best on a diet of pure optimax and an ECU reset.
It'll run fine on 97. At 95 it'll be trying to compensate for the fuel all the time.
And yes, I know it says it will run on normal unleaded in the manual, but TBH it's a bit of a lie. It runs, but they go like dogs.

Excuse the question to your question, but are we talking about a UK model or a JDM?
IMHO, if it is a JDM, running it on NUL is a recipe for disaster as it is tuned for 100RON, and those flat spots could well be the engine trying to control det (and likely only having limited success).
If I am barking up the wrong tree feel free to flail me and obviously ignore all the rubbish I wrote, although I bet any turbo would prolly run better on good juice.

I've got a MY93 Legacy turbo and run it on normal unleaded without any problems - True I do treat it pretty gently on the whole so might not notice any performance drops.
Does using Optimax or SUL make THAT much difference, either in terms of performance or engine longevity/reliability?

Is it UK or JDM?
JDM cars need to be run on SUL (97 RON) at least.
That is the advise I have been given from many sources.
If it dets, it can 'hole' your pistons after a while. Correct me if I'm wrong - but that sounds bad!!!

It's really simple:
Running these cars on 95RON fuel is not good for them. Period.
97 will see it running okay. They should really not be run on less than 97 unless it's an emergency, in which case, stay off boost, keep the revs sensible and get some optimax in there as soon as you can.
Yes, running on fuel that is too lean for the engine will eventually hole a piston or worse. This is unlikely on a UK spec car, but running an import on anything less than Optimax is frankly suicide.
If you have run your car on 95RON for a while, you will need to fill the tank with 97RON and do an ECU reset and your car will suddenly gain a LOT of performance.
