Hi I own a 1998 STi V4 Type R and am wondering if anybody has fitted succesfully a 6 speed gearbox into there impreza or know anybody that has. I am talking about road cars and not rally cars unless the principal is the same. What I am after is a longer gearing for top end and motorway cruising although dont really want to alter 5th.

 

A couple of people here have fitted the six speed box out of the new age STi's, so yes, it's eminently possible provided you're prepared to pay for it.

Complicating factors would be exactly what gearing options you had, given that you'd presumably want to keep your original rear diff, and whether you could get a DCCD equipped box, and furthermore integrate it with the older car's control electronics.
