Question

Hi,

My STI 5 has all of a sudden started whineing at 2500rpm upwards.

I am presuming its the Turbo?

It used to slightly whistle (audiable due to de-cat d/p), but now its whineing, its loud enough to hear inside the car / outside the car, still boosting fine tho.

Should I be worried?

Maybe turbo bearings gone?

any ideas?

Have you got a prodrive backbox fitted? If the baffles go they sound like a jet engine!

Question

Nothing to worry about then?

Funny really, had a loud exhaust (hiper) on before so it masked any noises, put the standard exhaust on and now hearing all different noises and getting scared

Yes it is a VF turbo (VF28) on STI 5's I believe...

Yep, its amazing the difference with a quiet exhaust. I really prefer the quiet one now, and its heathier to get used to hearing the engine / turbo noises.
