Mirror Fix?

Hello
Anyone know how to repair my n/s wing mirror? (MY98 UK)
It seems that a special serrated washer inside has snapped. Thus not compressing the spring down onto the spindle anymore. The housing was just flopping about but ive wedged some packing to stop it.
How do I remove the glass? I've pushed and pulled it but dont want to break it...
Or should I just get a set of M3 type (yawn) mirrors to replace them?!
